REIQ Journal : December January 2009
6 Industry News Celebrating 90 years of the REIQ When the Institute formed in 1918 there were 76 firms and 95 individual members; today the REIQ represents more than 2,000 accredited agencies which collectively employ more than 15,000 property professionals. THE INSTITUTE TODAY is a prominent and well-respected organisation that continues to improve the professionalism of our industry. To help commemorate the REIQ’s 90th year, Deeds, Dreams & Dedication: A History of the REIQ was launched recently. Well-known freelance author Gary McKay has spent the past few years researching and writing the history. Gary’s popular oral history technique has ensured the many books he has written have been successful, and so too, the anticipated success of the Institute’s history book. Deeds, Dreams & Dedication: A History of the REIQ is a book about the people who established the Institute, and who gave freely of their own time – often in unpaid capacities for several decades at a time – to ensure the REIQ became the recognised industry leader it is today. The book captures the spirit of members, the camaraderie of agents, and the dedication that has led to the high standards of ethics and professionalism in the industry today. Launching Deeds, Dreams & Dedication: A History of the REIQ at Customs House recently, the Governor of Queensland Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO said the title of the book reflected the many people over nine decades who had worked with energy and REIQ Journal December 2008/January 2009 commitment to build the Institute and to serve the industry with great dedication. “It is ‘a People Book’ … a book to leaf through, dip into, smile over, maybe for some of you members of the industry to recognise yourselves and some of your own reactions and experiences,” she said at the launch. “Obviously, it will - and should - have special meaning for members of the Institute and the profession, but it has value beyond your own ‘club’ and inner circle. “This book gives us not only the official history of an established Queensland institution and its role in our development, but tells a wider, larger story for a much larger readership, about our homes, our families, our communities; the places and spaces that have shaped us and housed our experiences; that hold the records of our lives.” Purchase a copy of Deeds, Dreams and Dedication: A History of the REIQ for $59.95 (including postage and handling) from the REIQ Real Estate shop or at www.memberlink.com. au/events/90th_anniversary Author Gary McKay, Margot Griffiths, REIQ fellow Gail Havig, REIQ past president Jean Hamer REIQ managing director Dan Molloy, author Gary McKay, Governor of Qld Penelope Wensley, REIQ chairman Peter McGrath AON’s Steve Pickett, REIQ director Jonathon O’Brien, AON’s Peter Lynch, Carter Newell’s Paul Hopkins Judy Wallace, REIQ life member and past president Ross Wallace, June Milton, REIQ life member and past president Ray Milton REIQ life member and past president Lloyd Olsen, Lyn Love
