28 Journal Q & A The Journal Q&A with 2008 REIQ Rookie of the Year, and PRDnationwide New Farm salesperson, Rachael Dawber After graduating from the Queensland University of Technology in the top 5 per cent of students with a Bachelor of Business degree (double marketing major) in 2002, Rachael Dawber began her career in marketing for a large multinational. She decided to make the switch to real estate because of the opportunities she saw in the industry and has been working in the New Farm residential market for 18 months. Q As a young person in real estate, what do you believe a career in this industry offers your generation that many other careers may not? A With the average Australian expected to make several career changes in their working life, I think the real estate industry offers young people from all backgrounds, levels of education and experience a rewarding career path. Unlike many other careers, there isn’t a single starting point to a career in real estate; there also isn’t a single career outcome. A career in real estate can lead to business ownership, REIQ Journal July 2008 managing people or working in a team. But the communication, negotiation and marketing skills you develop will be essential throughout your working life. Q What do you believe are the most serious challenges for the real estate industry over the short and long term? A The real estate industry - similar to other competitive service-based industries such as financial planning and mortgage brokers, which are also heavily regulated and under constant public scrutiny – will always face fresh challenges. But for businesses that seek to understand and respond to these challenges there is an opportunity to distinguish themselves from the competition. Q What are your major achievements in the real estate industry to date? A Completing my real estate licence, establishing myself in the competitive New Farm marketplace and winning the REIQ Rookie of the Year award are achievements I am very proud to have made in my first year in the real estate industry.
